Improving Lecturer Research Quality, UNIPMA Biology Education Study Program Holds Patent Workshop

Research is one element of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education. The quantity and quality of lecturer research strongly supports the role of Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) as a research center. The results of lecturers' research must be directed to the development of lecturers' professionalism in accordance with their expertise. In accordance with the Merdeka Learning Campus Merdeka (MBKM) program, lecturer research activities are one form of achieving the Main Performance Indicators (IKU) of Higher Education. The results of the lecturer's research are in the form of innovative products that have the potential to be patented.

Patent is one of seven types of IP that have been officially implemented in Indonesia. As an effort to increase the number of patents, UNIPMA Biology Education Study Program held workshops and assistance on patent drafting for lecturers. This workshop was funded by the Ministry of Education and Culture through a grant from the Merdeka Campus Competition Program (PKKM) in 2022. This activity was held for 2 days on 12-13 October 2022. “This patent workshop aims to provide information for lecturers about the importance of intellectual property protection and motivate lecturers to immediately patent the product of his research, “said Dr. Cicilia Novi Primiani, PIC of this activity.

This activity presented speakers Mohammad Isrok and Dr. Agus Zainuddin from KI Center, University of Muhammadiyah Malang. "Patents are exclusive rights granted by the state to inventors for their inventions in the field of technology for a certain period of time," said Mohammad Isrok. The product of the lecturer's research results will be very valuable if it can be commercialized and useful for the community. "The use of IP by industry is important and is expected to encourage quality research activities in universities," said Dr. Agus Zainuddin.

Patent workshop activities are carried out through clinical assistance activities for patents and simple patents. Lecturers are also asked to describe their superior products from research results that have the potential to be patented. This activity also dispels the assumption that managing patents is a difficult thing. The presenter provided a comprehensive and comprehensive strategy in preparing a patent draft.

"This activity is very relevant and opens the insight of lecturers in the protection of intellectual property products. The concept of clinical assistance on patent drafting makes lecturers more focused and realizes how important intellectual property protection is," said Dr. Linda Yuhanna, one of the workshop participants. As a sustainability effort, the Biology Education Study Program collaborates with the Central Bureau of Innovation and Intellectual Property (PIKI) to follow up and monitor the progress of the patent application process at DJKI Kemkumham.
