Bringing Classroom Knowledge to the Hospital, UNIPMA Pharmacy Students Strengthen Medication Services at RSI Siti Aisyah

UNIPMA—Eight undergraduate Pharmacy students from the Faculty of Health and Science (FIKS) at Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) completed their Field Work Practice (PKL) at RSI Siti Aisyah Madiun from September 7 to October 3, 2026. The activity served as an opportunity for the students to demonstrate their competence in applying pharmaceutical theories directly to patient medical services.

For nearly one month, the students were assigned on a rotational basis to three vital hospital units: pharmaceutical logistics, inpatient services, and outpatient services. Their presence focused on strengthening the accuracy and efficiency of the daily medication distribution process.

In the pharmaceutical logistics unit, the students were responsible for maintaining the availability of pharmaceutical preparations and medical devices in accordance with the First In First Out (FIFO) and First Expired First Out (FEFO) standards. They also carried out thorough verification of incoming goods and attached special labels to High Alert and LASA (Look Alike Sound Alike) medications to prevent potential medication errors.

The students’ active involvement also extended to the wards through the preparation of medications using the Unit Dose Dispensing (UDD) system. This system ensures that the medication doses prepared are appropriate for the daily needs of inpatients, along with replenishing emergency medication stocks in each ward.

“This experience provided a real-life picture of the responsibilities of pharmacists in hospitals, ranging from strict medication stock monitoring to direct interaction with patients,” said Ana Rizkya Azizah on Saturday (October 3).

In the outpatient service sector, the students assisted with prescription reception, medication preparation, the provision of Drug Information Services (PIO), and patient counseling. These activities trained their therapeutic communication skills as future pharmacists in educating the public about the safe use of medications.

UNIPMA Field Supervisor, apt. Desi Kusumawati, M.Farm.Klin., explained that the program was designed to ensure that students comprehensively master the application of pharmaceutical management, clinical pharmacology, and professional ethics.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Pharmacy Installation at RSI Siti Aisyah Madiun, apt. Rachma Fitri W., S.Farm., stated that the students’ contribution helped streamline operational service processes within the pharmacy installation.

This collaboration strengthens the readiness of UNIPMA graduates before they pursue the Pharmacist Professional Education program, while also strengthening the strategic partnership between the university and RSI Siti Aisyah Madiun.
