UNIPMA Prepares Modern Parang Animal Market to Address Waste Increase from an Early Stage
UNIPMA – Activity at the Modern Parang Animal Market in Magetan Regency has currently reached around 30 percent. This condition has become the starting point for collaboration between Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) and the Magetan Regency Government to establish a waste management system from an early stage through biogas and microbial technology.
The program is part of the 2026 Community Empowerment Program under the Regional-Based Empowerment (PBW) scheme, implemented by UNIPMA in collaboration with Universitas PGRI Ronggolawe (UNIROW). Entering the first year of a three-year program, the initiative is aimed at developing a waste management system that can grow alongside increasing market activity.
The implementation team consists of Dr. Pujiati, M.Si., as team leader, Dr. drh. Cicilia Novi Primiani, M.Pd., Nurul Kusuma Dewi, S.Si., M.Sc., from UNIPMA, and Riska Andriani, M.Si., from UNIROW.
Dr. Pujiati, M.Si., said the early stage of the market’s development provides an appropriate opportunity to establish a waste management system. “The market has only recently been relocated and its activity is still around 30 percent. This condition provides momentum to prepare waste management from the outset, so that when market activity increases, the management system can develop accordingly,” she said on Thursday (27/8).
In addition to developing the installation, the team is strengthening the capacity of partners through training. Waste management training was held on August 8, 2026, followed by training on the production and propagation of the BIOFOSTIK Microbial Formula on August 15, 2026.
“The target is for partners not only to receive the technology, but also to understand the management process and be able to operate it. Therefore, the training is carried out alongside the development of the installation,” explained Dr. Pujiati, M.Si.
The installation processes livestock waste into biogas for cooking needs. Some of the biogas is also planned to power a generator to support lighting in the market area. BIOFOSTIK is used to support biogas production from other organic materials, while the processing by-products are directed toward compost production.
The program, titled “Circular Bioeconomy Based on Microbial Technology in Livestock Waste Management for the Development of Parang Animal Market, Magetan Regency,” focuses on the energy sector and supports SDG 7 on affordable and clean energy and SDG 12 on responsible consumption and production.
The program involves the management of Parang Animal Market and BUMDes Troscno, Parang, Magetan, with support from the Magetan Regency Industry and Trade Office.
The program is funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology through the Directorate of Research and Community Service based on the Ministry–LLDIKTI Region VII contract Number 210/C3/DT.05.00/PM/2026 dated April 13, 2026.
Through the three-year program, the team aims to establish a waste management model that integrates renewable energy, microbial technology, and the utilization of processing by-products, enabling the system to develop sustainably alongside the growth of the Modern Parang Animal Market.
