UNIPMA PGSD Lecturer Provides KUB Native Chicken Farming Training for Residents of Teguhan Village
UNIPMA – Tiara Intan Cahyaningtyas, M.Pd., a lecturer from the Elementary School Teacher Education (PGSD) Study Program at Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA), conducted a training session on Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) native chicken farming for residents of Teguhan Village, Jiwan District, Madiun Regency, on Sunday (June 28). The activity was part of the PGSD Student Association (HIMADIGSAR) community engagement program titled GSB and Beraksi.
The training aimed to enhance the community's knowledge and skills in KUB chicken farming as a promising business opportunity in the small-scale livestock sector. It was also expected to support household food security by enabling families to meet their own animal protein needs.
During the session, Tiara Intan Cahyaningtyas, M.Pd., explained that the Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) chicken is an improved native chicken breed developed by the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (Balitbangtan) under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia. The breed was produced through genetic selection to achieve higher productivity than traditional native chickens.
According to Tiara Intan Cahyaningtyas, M.Pd., KUB chickens offer several advantages. They are more resistant to disease than broiler chickens, retain the distinctive taste of traditional native chickens, and can produce approximately 150 to 200 eggs per year. This production level is significantly higher than that of ordinary native chickens, which typically lay only around 50 to 60 eggs annually.
"Through genetic selection, the common weaknesses of native chickens—such as low egg production and a strong brooding instinct—have been minimized. As a result, KUB chickens offer higher productivity while maintaining the characteristics of native chickens that are favored by consumers," explained Tiara Intan Cahyaningtyas, M.Pd.
In addition to their high egg production, KUB chickens also grow more rapidly. With approximately 10 weeks of rearing, they can reach a body weight of 800 grams to 1 kilogram, making them a promising option for household-scale and small-scale poultry farming.
Tiara Intan Cahyaningtyas, M.Pd., added that KUB chicken farming can serve as an alternative source of income while helping families meet their nutritional needs.
"We hope that women in Teguhan Village will become interested in raising KUB chickens so they can independently provide protein for their families while also creating business opportunities that improve household income," she concluded.
