Variety Arts: BIPA UNIPMA International Participants Explore Javanese Culture Through Batik, Dance and Karawitan

The Indonesian Language Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) organized by the Cooperation and Public Relations Bureau (BKH) Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) has successfully implemented a series Javanese cultural learning activities. This activity aims to introduce Javanese culture to international students through various activities both inside the classroom and outside the classroom (Outdoor Leaning).

On Saturday, 04/20/2024, BIPA program participants visited Batik Candi Mulyo to learn batik. This activity was guided directly by the Head  the UNIPMA BIPA Division, Mrs. Dewi Triyana Sari, M.Pd. She gave an explanation about batik and batik techniques before the participants tried to make their own batik.

Furthermore, on Saturday, 27/04/2024, participants took part in dance training at UKM Tjandra Kirana UNIIPMA and musical performance at UKM Usaha Scholar Laras Swara UNIPMA. These two sessions were guided by Mrs. Devi Cintia Kasimbara, S.Pd., M.A., Brigitta Septarini Rahmasari, S.S., M.Pd., and Sesaria Prima Yudhaningtyas, M.Pd. Before starting practice, participants are given an explanation of the types of dance and the basics of musical art that they will learn and practice.

This activity, entitled "Getting to Know and Study Javanese Culture", is a program designed to provide participants with direct knowledge and experience of Javanese culture. Before each activity begins, participants are provided with relevant theoretical information, such as basic knowledge about batik, dance and karawitan musical instruments.

Participants in this program consist academics and students from various international institutions, including Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology (NEUST) and Mariano Marcos State University. Some of the participants present were MS. Cristina Virgina B. Jimmy and DR. Shirley Pascual AYEO-EO from NEUST, as well as other students, such as Mark James Barayuga, Midsy De la Cruz, Naomi Claire De la Cruz, Hannah Mira F. Toledanes, Charlie Miguel Chriselle Janne F., Ma. Louisa Zaragosa, Sofhia Domingo, Vanessa Padua, and Bervena Saraga.

Through batik making, dancing and playing musical instruments, participants gain practical experience as well as a deep understanding Javanese cultural heritage. This activity is useful for broadening their insight into the diversity of Indonesian culture.

It is hoped that this BIPA activity can continue and become a bridge for foreign speakers to get to know and love Indonesian culture, as well as enrich their cultural experience while in Indonesia.
