UNIPMA Pharmacy Study Program Holds Guest Lecture on Phytochemistry and Complementary Medicines
The Pharmacy Study Program at Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) held a guest lecture with Prof. Alice T. Rivera from Neust Philippines, on Monday 16 October 2023.
The activity which was carried out at the Integrated Lab Universitas PGRI Madiun carried the theme "Phytochemistry and Complementary Medicines".
Prof. Alice T. Rivera presented a series of Phytochemical methods to identify chemical compounds originating from plants or natural ingredients. This is because the identification of plant chemical compounds is very important in the development of herbal-based medicines.
Meanwhile, Complementary Medicines are complementary therapies known as traditional therapies, so they are combined with modern medicines to help the healing process and increase the body's immunity.
So the concept of Phytochemistry and Complementary Medicines is as a traditional medical therapy combined with modern medicine. Basic ingredients include lugandi leaves, which is an herbal plant from the Philippines for cough treatment. Because an overview of the classes of compounds contained in the plant. Then the procedure is also recorded to obtain secondary metabolites.
Complementary or traditional therapies can take the form of health promotion, disease prevention and rehabilitation. This form of health promotion includes improving lifestyle with nutritional therapy. Because healthy nutrition can improve health and become balanced.
The essence of the two themes presented by Prof. Alice T. Rivera from Neust Philippines is that legundi leaves are effective for treating someone who has a cough with minimal or even no side effects.
It can be explained that the Guest Lecture in the Pharmacy Study Program provides learning for students regarding the processing of herbal plants, especially legundi leaves in various varieties. So these herbal plants can be an alternative for treatment.
