Guest Lecture by UNIPMA’s Science and Biology Departments: Unveiling the Impact of Microplastics on Earth

The Science (IPA) and Biology Study Programs of Universitas PGRI Madiun (UNIPMA) successfully hosted a guest lecture on the pressing topic “Environmental Science: Microplastics.” Held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, the event featured Dr. Marjohn Thomas N. Conlu, Head of the Extension Services Department at Iloilo Science and Technology University (ISATU), Philippines, as the keynote speaker.

In his presentation, Dr. Marjohn addressed the critical issue of microplastic pollution, which has become a growing threat to global ecosystems. He explained the long-term impacts of microplastics on the environment and emphasized how scientific innovations can offer solutions to mitigate this crisis.

“Microplastics are no longer just an environmental issue—they have become a global concern that demands collective action and scientific solutions,” Dr. Marjohn asserted.

The session was moderated by Nurul Kusuma Dewi, S.Si., M.Sc., and attended by prominent figures including Dr. Marheny Lukitasari, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Vice Rector for Finance and General Administration), Dr. Tantri Mayasari, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Head of the Science Study Program), and Joko Widiyanto, S.Pd., M.Pd. (Head of the Biology Education Program), along with faculty members and students from both study programs.

This guest lecture is an integral part of the university’s mission to realize quality education, as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly the goal on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education.

The initiative reflects UNIPMA’s commitment to providing students with up-to-date insights into global environmental challenges. By inviting international experts, the Science and Biology Study Programs aim to expand students' understanding of environmental awareness and the vital role of science in preserving the Earth.
